Robert Daws is a RADA-trained actor of stage and screen in addition to being an accomplished trumpet player and author of the best-selling murder mystery novel The Rock. Ampthill LitFest is privileged to have him as our weekend’s Compère, including his turn “in conversation with” Barry Cryer on Saturday evening.

His many television credits include: Dr Gordon Ormerod in eight series of The Royal, Sam Mountjoy in three series of Roger Roger and Tuppy Glossop in four series of Jeeves and Wooster. Also, Roger Dervish in the award- winning Outside Edge (Nominated Best Actor-British Comedy Awards). Most recently, he plays the town curmudgeon, Dr. Thomas Choake, in the BBC’s hugely successful Poldark and has recently completed filming both Father Brown and Death In Paradise

His films include The Unfolding, Land of the Blind, According to Colin, The Great Escape Two and Richard Ordinary. Recent theatre work includes the national tour of Michael Frayn’s Alarms and Excursions, The Secret of Sherlock Holmes, Public Property and Yes Prime Minister.

His first crime novella, The Rock, was published in 2012 and made the top of the Amazon Bestseller list five times. His second Sullivan and Broderick murder mystery, Poisoned Rock, will be published as a novel in 2016. His third in the series, Rock of Ghosts, will be available later in the year.

Simon Michael was a barrister for over 35 years and practised at the Criminal Bar for 15 of them, prosecuting and defending murderers, armed robbers, con artists and other assorted villainy. He had several books published in the UK and the USA in the 1990s and his short story Split was shortlisted for the Cosmopolitan/Perrier Short Story Award.

In 2016 he retired from legal practice to devote himself to fulltime writing. The Brief (September 2015) and An Honest Man (June 2016) are the first two books in the Charles Holborne series, set on the dangerous gangland streets of 1960s London. Simon will be moderating the panel session Crime Writers in Crime: the Insiders and will be interviewing Francesca Martinez.
